Flock Talk: Of Idle Kings

A somewhat poetic look at the season thus far. One of the members here sent me a private message thanking me and asking me to post. I was buried at work today and did not have much time. I am literally just sitting down to relax now.

Hope you all enjoy this as it waxes poetic at points and gave me a chance to sort of flex some artistic concepts into a football season for the first time in a while.

Friday Fishwrap Filling

going to be interesting to see how injured the Duck women are going to be. Girls in the paint are going to have to take charge.

Here's one I control P'd

By James Crepea | The Oregonian/OregonLive EUGENE — Oregon’s offense has steadily improved over the last month thanks in no small part to the play of its offensive line. The No. 3 Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) enter Saturday night’s game at No. 23 Utah (7-3, 6-1) having allowed 36 tackles for loss and just 22 in conference play, best in the Pac-12 and the lowest rate per game since the NCAA tracked the statistic in 2004. It’s the lowest rate allowed by any team with Mario Cristobal on staff since Miami in 2004, when he was the tight ends coach. It’s also the lowest rate of tackles for loss allowed by any FBS team offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead has coached and second-best for offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, behind only Marshall in 2014 (3.39 per game)

OT: Great story of heart and determination

Someone I coached at South Dakota turned me to this story. Just a truly inspiring article about someone who endured more pain and more obstacles than most people will experience in a lifetime. His work ethic and drive to get back on the court are impressive.

Oregon missed

I fell asleep during half time and missed the rest of the game. The Ducks pretty much missed the whole thing. I haven't even checked the score. If you haven't you might want to keep it that way.

The Ducks missed an opportunity to impress the loyal fans in Portland. They missed a chance to perhaps get into the top ten. They missed too many foul shots for the second game in a row. They missed from beyond the arc. They missed in the paint. They missed getting offensive rebounds and let BYU have too many.

Altman's note book, or mind, is awash with things to work on. We know he builds strong teams over the season and he probably will again. He has a lot to work with.

Number 1 in the agenda should be the inside game play of his big men. He has four who could take over or at least heavily influence a game. None have yet. I know the chemistry of floor play develops over time, hopefully not too much of it, each year as new players enter the Picture. BYU had a lot more continuity and showed it last night. When the big men can't be depended on, other players have to try to create opportunity in the paint and the Cougar's bigs stopped them.

1A is foul shooting. The first game Oregon looked strong. Then. they flopped two games in a row. You can't leave points on the line when the talent and performance of the opponent is strong, even for just the one game they play vs the Ducks.

I've seen it pointed out but I don't think they shoot too many threes because they hit a good percentage (usually). Live by the 3 pointer, die by the 3 pointer, is hard to press when the team has so many marksman. All shouldn't go cold on the same night. Seldom can a defense stop good outside shooting if they have other things to occupy their attention. Ducks would be more open and hit more if there was a strong inside game their competition had to deal with. That goes back to point 1 and why it is that.

All the one shot, not always a good one, some very much forced, trips down the court are tough to overcome. With the height and size Oregon has there should not ne nearly as many as we saw last night. On the other hand defensive rebounds not gathered left some easy putbacks for BYU.

I guess it was one of those games which can happen early in a season before the team gels. I'm hoping we won't see too many more of them and too many is made up from a very low number, like I should have uninvolved fingers on one hand.

Let's see what the fishwrap is putting out there

Oregonian links

this next one has absolutely nothing to do with Oregon sports of any kind but I just had to add it on a slow day

by the way way, you might want to catch the Women's BB host Oklahoma before switching over to the Ducks football game on Saturday. You finish off the day with what might be a Must win for the Beaves vs ASU if you want to stay up late.

Where are the games broadcast and at what time?

The MIAMI Football HC position will be opening up this year....

So with all the DA negative chatter on here & other places regarding MC, thought I’d throw this out there & see what everyone’s view is. So, to start with...I don’t believe that MC would entertain any job over Oregon except one...that job starts with an A and ends with an A. And they are NEVER firing their coach & he’s not retiring any time soon. First let me say this about Miami...they are a dumpster fire & they can’t afford MC. Second, there is ZERO chance he’s taking that job. Now with that said...for all you people who have been putting to print, DA comments about him...here is your chance! What would be your true feelings if Miami could afford him and MC left us at the end of the year to return to his Alma Mater? Put some thought behind this...can you say you’d be happy that he was leaving? Myself, I would be seriously disappointed & frustrated. Far more than I was when the Chipster said goodbye!

I'm confirming the visitors at the game and will post them on this thread throughout the day. Starting with an interesting one, Michael Ogbeiwi. 2022 RB from Surrey, British Columbia. This was an official visit so quite interesting.
