Tonight I am going to a reception near Stanford for the new UO president. It is not likely a coincidence that president Scholz’s visit coincides with the Stanford Oregon game.
Over my long experiences as a Northern CA alumnus, I have lots of memories of the university’s outreach to alumni and potential students during the spirited rivalry with Stanford or Cal. It has been part of a wonderful connection between northern CA and the university.
I am sure that the Oregon and Stanford will continue to schedule each other from time to time but it won’t be the same.
Oregon has benefited immeasurably from their connection with the Bay Area. There will be new areas of the Big 10 in which Oregon will sprout new connections, but our Bay Area relationship has been around for over a century. This kind of relationship doesn’t happen overnight. The Bay Area / Oregon connection has been special. I’m sad to see this conference rivalry with Stanford coming to an end.
Now let’s go beat Stanford!
