Doing evaluations on each quarterback that participated Saturday at the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker QB Retreat in San Diego. Here is Tate Martell:

Good: Martell worked early from the shotgun, was stationary and zipped it accurately all over the field to receivers. He threw to the outside shoulder so either the receiver or nobody was getting it. It was also pointed out that the vertical throw should be outside the numbers on the field and Martell put it right there more than one time right on the money.

To no one’s surprise, Martell was absolutely fantastic throwing on the run to his strong side (running to the right) and against the grain (running to his left and making the throw that way). He was dead-on accurate rolling out and what was also impressive is that he didn’t jog through the drills. Martell went full speed all the time like it was a game environment. During the rollouts, there were three receiver options and Martell hit the short, medium and deep guy right on the numbers every time.

On the speed out drills, Clarkson wanted the receivers to run right to the sidelines and have the quarterback deliver the ball to a spot (not to a receiver) and have it always on the outside shoulder. It was a fail if the receiver had to reach back for the ball basically because it meant a corner could come up and knock it away. Martell was perfect in that drill from the shotgun and dropping back from under center.

When Martell was working in the pocket throwing all kinds of routes, he was very solid throughout the day. That’s saying something because Martell is known for his ability to throw on the run, make plays longer with his ability to escape tacklers and his poise when things break down. If he continues to add the ability to sit back in the pocket and pick apart defenses it makes him even more potent.

Bad: Martell sometimes has an elongated release but it does not seem to be a major issue because after being alerted to it his delivery became much more compact throughout the day. There are times also where Clarkson pointed out that Martell was resetting his feet on his drops and shifting his weight too early. Clarkson wanted 1-2-3-throw and Martell (like Shea Patterson and others) were going 1-2-3-reset-throw a few times. Again, once it was pointed out Martell corrected it himself but it’s something where he needs to show more consistency.

Recruitment: USC is probably out in front but Martell wasn’t willing to clearly say that on Saturday. He is going to now visit Alabama, Texas A&M, TCU and Oregon. He plans to remain patient in his recruitment through his junior season.
