How well will Oregon head coach Dan Lanning match up against USC and Lincoln Riley? His hire of an offensive coordinator will shape that answer and give us more of a basis for judging the Ducks’ big decision.

College football insider Bruce Feldman is out with a report on a central target for the Ducks. Our friends at Ducks Wire picked up that report.
Both Lanning and Dillingham coached together with the Memphis Tigers a few years back.
With the hiring of Lanning, the Ducks made it clear that they are prioritizing defense and recruiting, of which the former Georgia DC is among the best in the nation at. But they need a strong OC who can keep the offense at a championship-caliber.
If you were to ask Florida State fans about Dillingham, they would tell you Dillingham contains some value as a recruiter, but that he hasn’t been able to engineer a true transformation of the Seminoles under head coach Mike Norvell, who will enter the 2022 season on the hot seat.
USC fans would love this hire if Oregon and Lanning make it. Imagine the other offensive coordinator candidates the Ducks could pursue.
Dan Mullen.
Justin Fuente.
Joe Brady.
Jeff Grimes of Baylor, who has been fantastic under Dave Aranda.
Warren Ruggiero, who led a spectacular Wake Forest offense and got the most out of his talent with the Demon Deacons under head coach Dave Clawson.
One can think of several other offensive minds far more innovative and successful than Dillingham.
Dillingham is just 31 years old. Lanning needs a proven, steady hand as his offensive play-caller. If this really is the move, USC fans would not exactly quake in their boots.
It wouldn’t be a terrible hire; Dillingham has coached in the midst of a messy situation at Florida State. He hasn’t been coaching the caliber of talent he would have in Oregon, so there is some upside for the Ducks. Yet, compared to other options, the Ducks could do so much better than this.
We will see if this is actually the hire, or if this is a tease.
