After losing quarterback Fernando Mendoza to Indiana in December, two running backs with Duck connections (one a decommit, the other a signee) announced plans to enter the portal. Jadyn Ott and Byron Cardwell are leaving the Cal Bears.

Scott reported today that Rashad Samples is really, really happy with the guys he has in the running back room, but Ott is mildly intriguing, a four-star running back in the 2022 class with 2,597 career rushing yards and 31 total touchdowns.

Would he be an upgrade over Hughes or Whittington? 4.9 yards a carry coming off an ankle injury, a PAC-12 leading 1,315 rushing yards in 2023.

A better question is, what should Oregon pursue in the spring portal? This is an awesome, well-balanced roster. An off-ball linebacker? A third tight end? Or do they completely trust in three years of Top Ten recruiting? The Spring Game will be a compelling watch.
