EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene is set to host the 2021 IAAF World Championship.
Tracktown USA President Vin Lananna played a large part in securing the honor for Eugene and expects the event to draw 30,000 to 60,000 people.
"We will be creating a new innovative state of the art facility that will be a legacy of the U of O and the state of Oregon," Lananna said.
The decision followed a presentation to the IAAF in recent months by Eugene. All 27 members of the IAAF council met to make the decision after a special vote in Beijing.
Public leaders in Oregon pledged funding and promised to televise the competition in America.
Lananna says he expects up to five billion people world-wide to see the event in Eugene.
Today's decisions bypassed the usual bidding process. This comes after Eugene lost to Doha in a close vote for the 2019 World Championships.
