I put this in Flock Talk tomorrow but wanted to address this here. For those that do not remembner, Green was an elite interior OL from last year's class. He started 5 games after coming in against Texas this season and earned Freshman All-American honors.
There has been a lot of talk over the last couple of days about the destination for Green. Somehow, an Oklahoma insider made up a fanciful tale about Dan Lanning staying at a University of Oklahoma campus hotel the same day in which Green was cleaning out his locker room.
It gets even shadier with the ‘thoughts’ from this person in which he ‘wonders’ whether Oregon is telling Green not to sign the forms for entry into the portal until they have an NIL package done and signed first thereby keeping other teams away from Green. The implication here is that the primary potential suitor – Missouri – has had zero contact with Green or anyone else and is completely blindsided by the Oregon move.
I think everyone knows that I have some pretty well placed sources at Lee’s Summitt in Missouri (a suburb of Kansas City) – this is a wild exaggeration of what is happening and not even remotely close to what went on. First, it should be mentioned – Green officially entered the transfer portal today. There is no current deal in place with Oregon – and the number this person is throwing around as to what Missouri (and presumably Oregon) are willing to put together in terms oof NIL for an offensive guard is a seven-figure deal.
Simply put: not true.
What is true? Dillon Gabriel knows Green very well and thinks he would be an excellent addition – and that the staff knew from Gabriel that Green was not entirely happy about where he is at and that he might enter the portal. Players talk and this was no big secret around Oklahoma. Did Oregon camp out to help Green pack as insinuated? Did they convince Green not to enter the portal until a deal was signed to freeze out Missouri? Are they going to pay an interior offensive lineman one million dollars per year?
The first and third questions are laughable at best. Dan Lanning and several other coaches were in Oklahoma earlier this week to visit Xadavien Sims and several future prospects as well. While he likely stayed in Norman, it was not at a campus Hotel. Does anyone really think Dan Lanning – who worked for both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart – is dumb enough to stay at a University of Oklahoma Campus hotel while tampering with a current University of Oklahoma student-athlete? That is just too stupid to even be considered. Does anyone think that the Ducks are going to pay an interior offensive lineman with five starts to his name even remotely close to the NIL package offered to Bo Nix during his final season in Eugene? Also, a laughable suggestion.
Considering Green entered the portal officially on Thursday and did not immediately announce for Oregon, this one is also a pure fabrication.
When news started percolating earlier this week that Green was likely to enter the portal, I checked around and everyone I had talked to thought he was headed to Missouri. That includes folks inside the Oregon program. I do think that Oregon stands a chance here, but we will see how it all turns out. I know Gabriel would love to have him protecting him along with the elite players Oregon has at tackle – but this one was not a done deal when Green entered the portal.
There is more going on behind the scenes that is wild conjecture as to why Green left, but let me just say unequivocally, Oregon did not help orchestrate anything.
