If Carrington had done heroin, crack, crank or alcohol it would have been out of his system in a day or two. Pot, the wimp of drugs, is way less destructive than alcohol and the rest. The trouble is that it stays in the fat cells and can be detected, as Wikopedia states- "cannabis metabolites can be detected in the body several weeks after administration".
Carrington could have smoked a toke weeks ago and now he is being severly punished. How many of his teammates and other college players have gotten stupid drunk in the meantime and not had an NCAA problem? Drive drunk and risk the lives of many and you would not have this level of NCAA punishment. Carrington should not have made this mistake but it is minor compared to the hypocrisy of the current NCAA rules.
Disclaimer- I am not currently a pot smoker and understand pot, like all drugs (inc. alcohol) has hurt the lives of many. This is a matter of the "crime" fitting the punishment.
