Milesplit has a top 50 recruit list for boys and girls track and for boys and girls cross country. There are other services that have highly regarded lists as well, but Milesplit usually ...to use a track expression "gets out of the blocks" quickly.
On the women's side Oregon had one top 50 signee, Tia Jones. She was ranked #1 on Track and Filed News and #5 on Milesplit. A few days ago, she announced that she would forgo going to Oregon and was signing pro....and now the girls don't have any superstar recruits....at least for the moment. All hopes turn to women's distance coach Helen Lehman Winters and her renown connections with European distance programs.... we'll wait and see.
As for the men...what a difference a day makes! As things stood before today, the men only had one NLI, and he would be ranked at best a 3 star. Today the men got two NLIs from high school elite recruits Cole Hocker and Luis Peralta.
Peralta is the top high school 800m runner in the nation. Milesplit ranks him the 8th best recruit in the 2019 recruiting class....making him fairly comparable to Oregon football's star signee Kayvon Thibodeaux.....relative to track recruiting,
Cole Hocker is an elite distance and middle distance recruit, Milesplit ranks Hocker the #2 cross country recruit in the country.
We are talking a reversal of situations between the men and the women. The Oregon men's program has just put the college track world on notice to not count them out....but the college track world has learned that you can never count Oregon out. Oregon got off to a slower start than the other top programs, but to use another track expression Oregon "has a great finish".....stay tuned because Oregon is now in the race for a top recruiting class.
