In one way the polls and the playoff committee are good for college football.
They get people talking about the sport and debating how teams stack up from spring practice to mid-January.
When you compare the completeness, talent and explosiveness of this Oregon squad to the best around the country, I don't think the Ducks are quite there yet.
The offense is averaging 21 points a game in Power 5 games, and that isn't enough. The teams at the very top have stifling defenses, but they can put points on the board also.
The Ducks have good discipline and a great coaching staff. They seemed to have solved their road woes, strong out of the gate in both their games away from Autzen.
It's reasonable to expect they'll continue to improve, but cracking that top 4 would require a series of fortunate events.
To me that's okay. What I wanted to see from in Cristobal Year 2 was to continue the growth of the
program, sustain the recruiting momentum and compete for the PAC-12 title.
So far they are doing all of that. If they beat Cal after the bye week they'll be in the driver's seat in the North. Sweep in October and they'd have a commanding lead.
Like Kelly used to say, keep your head down, keep working and look up at the end of the year.
