"I always think everything is a trap. That's why I'm still alive."
--Prince Humperdinck in "The Princess Bride"
The PAC-12 schedule is a gauntlet. While SEC teams are playing Southeast Coastal Nobody State the week before their rivalry game before 95,000 home fans, the Conference of Champions is playing on the road in the sleet in Salt Lake City or Pullman.
There are no weeks off, and every team except the Beavers has some dangerous players and a coaching staff with some experience. Who knows what Chip Kelly will put together in his first year at UCLA?
Duck fans are pretty confident about a successful season, many pegging the team at 9 wins or so, but do you see a weekend where the year could go south? Lose a couple of close ones to tough teams, suffer an injury or two, drop one that you shouldn't and all the sudden you wind up in Turdville.
For my money, the Cal game on September 29th looms large. The Ducks host Stanford on September 22nd, travel to Berkeley, take their bye, then prep for a showdown with conference favorite Washington October 13th in Autzen Stadium. That's the crux of the season, right there.
It'd be awfully easy to sleep on the Bears, coming off a big win or crushing loss to the Cardinal, thinking about a little downtime, the start of school and a date with those pesky, distempered, boring, overrated, ugly Dawgs, who in their last visit to Eugene wagged their way to a 70-21 mauling of a Duck squad that didn't care very much.
Where do you see the trap game on the Oregon schedule, the pivotal week that ought to be in the win column but could just as easily slide into an Alamo Bowl Are You Kidding Me Moment?
