I never met Neal. In the old days competitive lifters and some track throwers trained in the Eugene YMCA gym. It was there that I first remember hearing his name. He used to train there. By the time that I was training there he had moved back to California.
I moved from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz Co. in the mid 90s. One day I heard from an Oregon Alumnus in Santa Cruz that Neal was living in the county. If I ever met him or passed him by, I wouldn’t have known it because he would have been much older than his photos from his athletic competition days.
He was one of the great throwers in UO history. Neal held the University Shot Put record from 1967 to 1982. He still sits at second, and was only surpassed narrowly in 1982 by Dean Crouser.
I consider Neal to be the best all time Duck shot put thrower. I am saddened to hear of his passing.
