So, during the early part of the Jim Leavitt will he or won't he saga, I had read his contract and saw a buyout that seemed pretty strong; but there were actually several levels to the buyout which created some confusion on my part.
As someone who does not like to make factual errors, I took this very personally because there was some bad information out there which was my fault. So here is what I discovered on the levels of buyout:
1) If Taggart had never left, but Leavitt had been fired without cause, Oregon would have owed 100% of the remaining contract, this was where the 3.45 million number came from
2) If Oregon had terminated Leavitt's contract after the head coach left, Oregon would have owed Leavitt 100% of the remaining contract OR 12 months whichever is less; that would have been 1.15 million
3) If Oregon had not termed the contract, but Leavitt found another job prior to 1/31/18, the buyout was $500,000
4) If Oregon had not termed the contract, but Leavitt found another job AFTER 1/31/18, the buyout was $250,000
Sorry for the confusion all!
