Mr. Taggart ,

I know the dilemma you are in is not of your making and the last thing you wanted to see happen at this juncture in your career, but just the way the chips have fallen in the last few days. You must be feeling a lot of pressure from all sides concerning your decision to remain with Oregon or take the Florida State Coaching job. I know you are in agonizing situation in regard to this choice. I would like to offer you a few things to ponder as you come to your decision.

1. This is a choice that will define your legacy as both a football coach and as a person for the rest of your life.

2. You have done an exceptional job in instilling a new vibrant atmosphere for the Oregon Athletic Program this year.

3. The University of Oregon Administration and fan base have embraced you and your oft stated quest to bring a National Championship to Oregon.

4. Your current players and the recruits you have committed to Oregon have great respect and love for you both as a person and coach.

5. You can remain as the Head coach of Oregon and finish the job you have told the University of Oregon Administration, players and recruits that you promised you would do. If you do decide to remain and complete the job that the University of Oregon and it’s fan base brought you to Oregon to do, you will enhance your reputation as a classy individual with integrity and a man who honors his word, which of late in the College football world seem to be in short supply.

6. If you leave for the Coaching job at Florida State at this juncture, the decision to do so may well tarnish your reputation as a man of honor with lack of integrity and will hang over your head for the rest of your career as a few other coaches have learned to their regret.

7. I am sure that the FSU job opportunity will be there for you again sometime in the future.

8. In the long run, a decision to remain at Oregon and succeed, will actually make it more likely that you will have an opportunity to coach at FSU(which I realize you said is your “dream job” )at some point in the future as I am sure that there will be more occasions for you to do so down the road.

9. To go this route would cement your legacy as a man with honor and integrity and not as a coach who bolts at the first opportunity that comes down the road as I have too often seen other Coaches do , in most cases as a money grab.

10. By staying at Oregon you will show the coaching world, the University of Oregon and its fan base that you are a man with high character and be a great example for your players and recruits as a man who can be trusted to honor his word.

11. In conclusion, I believe character and integrity are the most important values a person can have in life and define him as person.

Sincerely
