Who is Charlie Hunter? I had the pleasure of meeting Charlie last Spring, while he and a few of his Australian friends were touring the USA and getting into some races along the way. When he got to Eugene, and met with Andy Powell, he was blown away with the University of Oregon track program. His hope of coming back to train at the University of Oregon has not been an easy task. For one thing, he is in school and training on his own dime, with the hopes of getting assistance after proving himself, ala Mick Stanovsek. Though he doesn't come in with great times, or even much recent track experience, relative to what we have become accustomed to at Oregon, Charlie seems to have some intangibles that could lead to success. He has the desire to be good, and he has great faith in the Oregon training program.
Tonight, at the OSU High Performance meet, Charlie was entered in the 1500 meet race as an Unattached runner (redshirt). He has to be excited with the 3:44 (a 4:01 mile) that he ran, and Andy Powell has to be smiling a bit this evening. Here is a nice background article to introduce Charlie to the Eugene track fans.
