We are now in the middle of this great meet.
It's nothing new. A big meet like this is always filled with upsets, thrills, disapointment and drama.
The good news is that two Duck alumni punched there ticket for Rio today. The biggest thrill for Duck track fans came in on a javelin throw from Cyrus Hostetler. It was awesome. As the javelin left his hand, you could hear a collective gasp from the crowd. Right away you could feel that this was a big throw....273 ft. Big! Cyrus won the event on that throw. Sam Croser finished 4th, but the third place finisher never had anOlympic qualifying throw this year, so Sam moved up from 4th place to be one of the three American javelin throwers to punch their ticket to Rio.
Raevyn Rogers came up short on the women's 800, finishing 5th. Jenkins, and Rupp qualified for the finals in the 5k. Brianne Nerud had a solid performance in the steeple, but won't advance.
Congratulations to Cyrus Hostetler. This will be his second Olympics. He had one of the most exuberant victory laps that I've seen. It just adds to the pagentry of the meet. About the time that Hosteler was going crazy with joy over his sucess. Ex Cal track star, Alasha Montano, was crying hysterically over her nightmare. I was instantly reminded of the old start to the "Wide World of Sports" ...." The Thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" Folks, it was absolute drama. Both athletes were on the same stage at the same time but neither had any idea of what the other was experiencing. They were in different universes at the same time.
