CBS Sports writer Barrett Sallee has a feature on the Auburn Tigers today. He describes this as a pivotal year for head coach Gus Malzahn, whose future may depend on the outcome of the position battle at quarterback.
Malzahn is in the second year of a 7-year, $49 million contract. Last year Auburn finished the regular season 7-5, 3-5 in the SEC, before a blowout win over Purdue in the Music City Bowl.
The Tigers have to replace Jarrett Stidham, who departed for the NFL draft. Holdover Joey Gatewood (6-5, 237) is leading slightly in a two-man race with five-star true freshman Bo Nix.
Their head coach wrote the book (literally) on hurry-up spread football and this spring one of their goals is to ramp up the pace with Malzahn taking over playcalling duties as he did in the bowl game and as OC in the Cam Newton championship season.
