Whenever a player retires or transfers out, we often think, "well, that frees up a scholarship." That phrase or something like it comes up frequently on the boards.

A team can sign up to 25 a year, 27 if you're Nick Saban at Alabama.

15 or so freshmen will redshirt. 4 classes plus 15 is 115 scholarships in four classes.

Yet there is an 85-man scholarship limit.

A team has to lose 7.5 players a year to stay under the limit.

It's not until you get to the 9th guy that you've freed up a scholarship. And each and every year there's the 25-man signing limit.
