Second half rally lifts Ducks over Fresno State...

FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at halftime to defeat Fresno State 68-61 in their first true road game of the season at the Save Mart Center in front of 9,225 fans.

How it Happened: It was a less than eventful start for the Ducks (9-3) as Fresno State (9-3) jumped ahead 5-0 to open the game and did not relinquish the lead the entire first half.

UO pulled within one twice, but could not capitalize due to a six-minute scoring drought midway through the half. Elijah Brown looked to put the Ducks on level terms with a big three-pointer to make it 27-26, but back-to-back three-pointers from FSU's Jahmal Taylor gave Fresno State a quick seven-point cushion.

The Bulldogs closed out the first half leading 38-28 shooting 48 percent from the floor in the period, 5-of-10 from three-point range, compared to the Ducks' 29 percent.

In the second half, Elijah Brown picked up right where he left off opening the period with a three-pointer to spark an 8-0 run for the Ducks and make it 40-36 early on.

Fresno State's hot-shooting from beyond the arc kept the Ducks at arm's-length early in the second half, until an 11-0 run capped off by an Elijah Brown layup gave UO their first lead of the game, 53-51, with 7:04 left to play.

From there Oregon never looked back, extending their lead to 64-52 thanks to a 22-1 run. Fresno State went nearly the entire final 12 minutes without a bucket shooting 6-of-25 in the second half.

UO outscored FSU 40-23 in the second half shooting 48 percent from the floor.

Who Stood Out: Elijah Brown led the team with 20 points, going 4-of-5 from three-point range … Freshman Kenny Wooten recorded his second career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds … Wooten also finished with six blocks, tying his career-high and marking his third straight game with at least four blocks. He has 16 blocks over the last three games … Payton Pritchard extended his double-digit scoring streak to 10 games with 12 points … Troy Brown nearly got his fourth straight double-double finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Notable: The Ducks dominated under the rim out-rebounding Fresno State 44-33 while out-scoring the Bulldogs 34-18 in the paint … UO took advantage of Fresno State's 14 turnovers scoring 19 points off the Bulldogs' miscues … As a team the Ducks had 12 blocks, one shy of the team record.

Quotable:
Head Coach Dana Altman
On Kenny Wooten's performance…
"Kenny (Wooten) was the difference in the game. He really gave us a big lift offensively and defensively. His energy really got us going."

Freshman Forward Troy Brown Jr
On what it takes to win…
"For us to win games, we have to rebound and play defense."

On Oregon's first half struggles…
"I felt like in the first half we were forcing shots."

Up Next: The Ducks return to Matthew Knight Arena for their final non-conference game of the season against Central Arkansas Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks).

Analysis of Oregon’s Bowl game/Coaching method

Oregon's O Line and D line got manhandled by a non power 5 school. Herbert spent the whole game running for his life. The Offensive game calling is still terrible. The Defense actually did better offensively than the Offense. The entire team lacked focus and looked confused and was often out of place both on offense and defense. The team simply didn't block, tackle, pass defend well at all or put any pressure on the opposing QB. Again they were making numerous mental mistakes and committing stupid penalties. This tells me that some of the Coaches did not make any effort to properly prepare the team for this game. When half the assistant Coaches don't know if they will even be coaching on the Oregon team next year, then this is the type of result you can expect.

The Jury is still out on Christobal as the H.C. Just because he is popular with the team does not make him a good H.C. Mora and Neuheisel and Hoke were popular with their players, probably because they were not worked hard enough in practice and allowed to cut corners in conditioning and not forced to execute at a high level over and over.

Coaches like Saban,Bryant,Lombardi, Bellichek, Harbaugh, Devaney Osborne, Bowden, Stagg, Wilkinson,Schembechler and many other successful H.C.'s were or are not particularly popular with their players but were or are feared and respected because they worked their players relentlessly and would not let up until their players were performing at a repetitively and consistently high level in practice and their teams achieved superior results in games because of this(somewhat like a drill Sergeant in the Military). Their players would often say that they worked far harder and more intensely in practice than in their games. I don't know if Christobal has that type of mentality. Time will tell. In conclusion, being a popular H.C. does not predict success in a football game but being harsh and unrelenting and not accepting anything less than perfection invariably will lead to a successful outcome in most football games.

On my way to Vegas...

I'll let you know of all flight delays, cancellations and ensuing mayhem on this thread. Heading to the airport in about 15 minutes. Will be in Vegas, fingers crossed, in time for interviews today.

Tom Corno will be there tomorrow and Warren Williamson is there now. Tom will do photos, Warren will provide some articles and I will do interviews and analysis.

Off we go!

Must Share ...Please Read This

This was posted on educk's track forum. i don't normally post things on DSA from other sites, but I have to share this with my favorite website. After checking out the book and the author, I discovered that the book is a big seller. The author lives in New York and didn't attend Oregon. Apparently this author is well known.

Tonight I was reading a mystery novel. Towards the end of the book, we are in the hero’s kitchen in Washington DC. The doorbell goes off and … Robert Johnson walks into the house! Turns out that the hero’s daughter is a 800 meter star and Johnson is there to recruit her. He begins by eating grandma’s pie and recruiting grandma for the benefit of the whole team (good move!). Then Johnson spends the next 4 to 5 pages talking about the track program, the university, Eugene and the area around Eugene. He even mentions the Clark Honors College. He then tells her that if she works hard and gets the right coaching that she could be better than Phyllis Francis (I would say that Robert is on thin ice here).

Anyway, this was totally unexpected by me. The book is “The People vs Alex Cross” by James Patterson. The scene is on pages 321 to 328.

Men's 4x100

I didn't want ot continue to highjack the Strength coach thread so I thought that I'd continue the 4x100 discussion this on a separate thread. We are blessed to have Trackdrake on DSA, so perhaps he can share with us some info.

Of corse Rocky and Demarcus will be on the 4x100. How do you see it roundiung out.?The bench is deeper than it is fast.

I'd guess that Webb, Brooks James, Nelson, Daniel, Swank Jones, Schmidt, Shellmire, R Brooks and maybe even Torres could contribute.

If TBJ is good to go he will have a leg. My guess then would be Simpson, (out of blocks), Webb, TBJ, and The Rock. With Daniel an alternate for Webb. That isn't half bad....especially when one considers that Rocky, Webb, and Daniel are freshmen. They might show great improvement over the corse of this track season.

Help us out here Trackdrake....and anyone else.

Any idea on how Cristobal and Johnson will cooperate? Usually the football coach finds himself being pushed by the culture (if you know who I mean) to allow for some sprinters/hurdlers to do both. Eventually they discover that it is a phenomenal recruiting benefit.

Might Rocky be asked to run on the 4x400? How about Webb, or Daniel?

Question and comment on Duck coaches

The Duck coaching staff will have 4 days after the bowl game to firm up the early signing recruits. We have heard much speculation on which coaches are staying and leaving.Here is my question;

Does MC know right now, EXACTLY who is going to be on his coaching staff Sunday morning? Its OK for us to speculate, but it would be inexcusable if MC does not know who is staying. It would also be inexcusable if replacements are not already in place for those who are leaving. These things cannot be up in the air. Coaches must hit the road Sunday with those coaches that are staying, meeting recruits face to face with assuring that they are on board, and any new coaches introducing themselves to recruits that don't know them

I'm sure that MC is on top of this, but its hard to know for sure. There is no time for Leavitt or anyone else to be undecided.
