Verdell and Oline

Balled last night! I will admit I have not been overly impressed with him. But last night, he did everything I said he wasn't doing, and did it fantastically. He saw the cutback lanes, he saw the holes, he ran through and over tackles, he got tripped and kept his feet moving, he ran like his hair was on fire. I hope that last night opened his eyes to how great he can be, and even better. Verdell, with the help of our Oline opening holes and giving him space, showed us what our running game can be like. Thank you!

NCAA Bending on NIL $$$

Saw this in my news feed. I also heard an interview with a former NCAA guy who said something to the effect "this will allow SA's to engage in advertising with local restaurants or car dealerships, for example." Hmmm, really? I guess they may have a clause that the SA can't engage in promotions of companies with whom the U has a preexisting promotional contract, and that a PSA can't be "lured" to the school with "promises" of such contracts....but it's hard to see how much of that will be enforced. . Think how this could interplay with loose rules regarding transfers? Could this be great for UO?. Gonna get interesting. Anyway. the times they are a changing....

Cristobal pre-USC comments...

Just got back from the Cristobal presser. I asked him two questions, one if film review revealed anything and two, what they need to do to tighten up the PAT unit.

Anything else stick out on film after review?

When you have a victory like that, I think over the past couple of weeks, our team has found different ways to win. First that’ a testament to the character, to the care factor, to the brotherhood of the guys in the locker room because winning football games are hard and sometimes people say they worry about emotional roller coasters coming off of a big win on the road.

We knew that Washington State was going to present some challenges, we knew they were a more difficult and very unique scheme and we knew that somebody in that locker room, and sometimes an unexpected person was going to have to step up and make plays. I think everyone in their own respective right mad a significant play in that game. I think across the board there’s a lot of guys to mention but I think that our team and our staff feels comfortable in saying giving it to the team instead of picking out individuals. Proud of the team effort.

You guys need to do anything to tighten up the PAT unit?

When we talk about technique and fundamentals, kicking the football is the ultimate technique and fundamentally oriented task, right. It’s almost as simple as wherever those hips face, that’s where the ball is going to go. If you come across your body the ball is going to go across and maybe right by the upright as well. Without question every detail of that unit, because at Stanford we had the foot of the guard tip that ball.

That could have gone the other way, right. In a game like this, we had to play catch-up, we had to score on a 2-point conversion to have a shot to win at the end. That 2-point conversion became even more critical to have. It becomes a domino effect if things like that become a reality. We are fully committed to making sure our PAT and our field goal unit is operating at the highest possible level. Can’t have those mistakes.

Another Air Raid?

As if Leach's bombers weren't enough, it's likely that we'll see the same attack in the Coliseum, Saturday.

Taking a quick look at Trojan stats, they put up 368 passing yards against Utah with a freshman qb, (Fink) And did it again with a another freshman, (Slovis), who put up 406 yds against the Buffs last weekend. They average 300 passing yds per game. The Dawgs were the only team with an effective pass defense, limiting them to 163 yds.

Their run game can go when it has to, 266 v. FSU, 212 v. Dawgs and 201 v. 'Zona. Otherwise, it doesn't show and was limited to 13 yds. against Utah. They are short on backs, but the freshman, Christon, is a burner, who was just pressed into service and is dangerous.

Our Ducks' pass defense should get LA salivating after the last two weeks, giving up over 800 yds and over 60 points to the Dawgs and Cougs. Pittman is lethal deep and short and St. Brown is no slouch, while Slovis sure as hell isn't bothered by the freshman knock.

They can be scored on, which invites discussion as to what Arroyo intends to dial up while SC preps for our run game. And we'll need pass protection better than last week, if anyone saw the rush they put on Zona. As for the D?
Scratching my head about Avalos , but suspect he'll be plotting against the deep ball and Pittman, especially.

I don't like this matchup at all, especially in the Coliseum where SC is 4-0 and we now seem vulnerable. On the plus side, any win at any points will mark us as for real.

Officiating

I am not normally one to complain about officiating. I learned very young that if you let the refs get into your head you have already lost the game.

But, as a fan, watching last night, excuse my language but that was just ****ing embarrassing. It’s been a LONG time since I have seen that many bad calls have the possibility of affecting the game like last night.

Anyway...gutsy win against a team that was obviously treating this game like it was their Super Bowl.
