DSA Tailgate: 11.6 Arizona

Good morning all; this season has been sort of haphazard from the tailgate perspective as we worked our way back into everything; we will be in our normal spot tonight with food and drinks; all are welcome to stop by and chat.

We will be doing a LOT more for the Civil War game in two weeks - and Leslie Kegg Reed will be able to make that one! YAY!!!!!!

Anyway, for those that may have forgotten where we are here is a map photo: (Go to where the yellow arrow points!)

Because I am a glutton for punishment

I re-watched the Arizona game from last season (I watched the 2017 game yesterday).

Here were Oregon's first seven possessions:

1. 3 plays, 9 yards; punt
2. 3 plays, 8 yards, punt
3. 3 plays, 6 yards, punt
4. 1 play, 5 yards, fumble
5. 4 plays, 16 yards, punt (first 1st down of the game on this drive)
6. 3 plays, -2 yards, INT
7. 3 plays, 0 yards, blocked Punt

So after 7 possessions, Oregon had run a grand total of 20 plays for 42 yards; they had 2 turnovers and a blocked punt...

Herbert was 6 of 14 for 32 yards and the INT.

And they trailed only 16-0; they scored a TD on drive #8, converted a 2 point conversion and somehow found themselves within a score midway through the second quarter.

At one point in the second half, Herbert was 15-35-95 yards and the INT; he should have had 2 more, but got very lucky.

The OL was beaten far too often in both run and pass plays; the DL played the dive fairly well, but got really tired over the course of the second half. Arizona held the ball for 36:09 in the game and, thought they came in averaging a 39% 3rd down conversion rate, converted 8 of 18 in the game.

All in all, it was just ugly. I expect Arizona to try and make it ugly again; to try and get into the heads of the Ducks; to get them to lose their discipline and make stupid penalties. But I expect the Ducks to be much better prepared and much more focused this year; I also know for sure that there were some 'corrective measures' taken to remind the team of its responsibility to remain disciplined on the field.

Memphis Caves on Wiesmen

The problem for them is they play such a weak confr Penny was probably desperate to get is guys some early comp vs UO ans other non confr teams. I'm glad he played cuz if the Ducks are going to do well they are going to have to deal with teams with good bigs--test passed!

"Memphis has declared James Wiseman ineligible and will withhold him from games after the freshman basketball star withdrew his lawsuit against the NCAA on Thursday."

Corey's Take

A Unified Theory of Duck Football

So...Geoff Schwartz et al.:

I love me some Schwartz.

But...here's how I see it.

1. Ultimate Goal at our level is Natty....not becoming Bowl Eligible or what not.

2. To get to the Natty....you have to get into the Playoffs. Fact. No Debate.

3. Once you get to the Playoffs...both teams have to play the game. Everybody on this Board knows that once you are in a game...ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

4. That's why you have to get into the Game.

5. Schwartz and co.....what makes you think that we will be better next year?

While I wholly expect to be...YOU NEVER KNOW...ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

Injuries, sanctions, etc.

You CANNOT, with certainty, plot out your future.

6. So...when opportunity knocks...KICK THE FRICKEN DOOR DOWN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!

Respectfully...

EDIT: CASE IN POINT: EVANSVILLE (??) BEAT KENTUCKY TONIGHT IN MEN'S BB.

IF EVANSVILLE DID NOT "MAKE IT TO THE GAME" THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO KNOCK OFF KENTUCKY!!

As my GF says...."that's why they play the games!!"

Cristobal pre-Arizona Q&A

  • Bye week focused on improving and becoming more sharp - Lots of good vs. good to make sure they improved rather than stayed the same
  • Dallas Warmack, CJ Verdell and Cyrus Habibi-Likio were full go this week
  • Lots of recruiting last week - The Oregon brand is really feeling strong out there
  • Brady Breeze He cares, has always wanted to play here.
  • DB communication improvement has been very important to the success of the D this year
  • Arizona gets downhill in the running game. Can get tempo going
  • A couple questions about the emotions of USC game, penalties - Coach very aware

One Year!

Brothers, Gents, Heathens, and Miscreants

I am happy to announce it has been a year since my open heart surgery. Many thanks to all of you for the well wishes last year. It has certainly been a trip and like our Ducks, things are different than they used to be. I purposely scheduled my surgery to mitigate missing any games last year and I'm happy to announce, there has not been a single game I was unable to tune in to. It has been a joy to see Ducks Football and Women's Basketball so prominent on the national stage and it looks like the Men's Basketball might be right there with them. So many good things happening and I'm truly blessed to be on the right side of the dirt to witness it all. And to SOD, you're going to be just fine after your procedure!
