Back from Cristobal presser: Notes...

Not a bunch of huge news. We all saw the game Saturday and know it's the Beavers coming up in a huge game.

  • Jalen Redd and Jake Hanson are both expected to play against OS
"We feel that Jaylon Redd is healing up really well and feel he is probably going to play. Also feel the way about Jake Hanson."
  • He feels the team will not repeat the mistake of last year...letting the WSU loss affect them the next week. "I think the fact that this is such a huge rivalry, this is such an important game to our players, our university, our community. The fact that Oregon State is playing really good football and they have a really good football program. I think there are so many factors and some many things, the last game for our seniors in Autzen Stadium. This is everything you would want in ca college football game, especially for your last one of the regular season. I think and feel very confident we’ll be dialed and focused in.”
  • Incredibly quiet plane ride home from Tempe
  • Feels the defensive backfield will correct what ailed them on some of those ASU breakdowns
  • Says they are not going to be a QB running offense but Herbert is free to run on RPO reads
  • Says that he definitely noticed Johnny Johnson III last Saturday and he expects for his role to expand
  • Favorite thing about Thanksgiving is that they get to practice "It's a work week."
  • I'll have the full video up before too long

Some Civil War History

It's hard to imagine, but through 1976, the Ducks had a losing record against OAC. Post WWII, the Beavers dominated, with Oregon 9-20-2 from 1946-76. But the arrival of Rich Brooks in 1977 brought a change in the rivalry.

According to The Oregonian, Oregon is now 65-47-10 all time against OAC. (Stassen shows fewer wins and fewer losses.) From 1977-2018, the Ducks are 31-10-1 (the Toilet Bowl being the tie). Five Beaver wins occurred from 2000-07, and that stretch includes all of the wins over Oregon by a Beaver team with a winning record since 1977. (There have been only five other winning seasons for OAC since 1977 (1999, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013). Oregon won the Civil War in each of those years.).

The Ducks have won 10 of the last 11, and 14 of the last 20 Civil Wars.

In 2008, Oregon's 65-38 win deprived OAC of a trip to Pasadena, and in 2009, in the Civil War for the Roses, Oregon earned its first Rose Bowl since 1994 with two fourth down conversions in the closing minutes.

OAC has needed a win in the Civil War to get to .500 in 2001, 2005, 2010, and 2014. Oregon won each of those games.

In 2001, No. 2 Oregon beat OAC when Keenan Howry returned a fourth quarter punt for a touchdown, shortly before a monsoon began. There was no block in the back.

David Kelly

Is gone from FSU.

Seems like some of you liked him while he was here.

FSU fires David Kelly (Nov. 18)
Odell Haggins announced Monday that FSU was promoting Mario Edwards Sr. to the role of an on-field assistant coach. This came as a result of FSU’s decision to move on from recruiting coordinator David Kelly.

Kelly was a receivers coach in 2018 and transitioned to recruiting coordinator in 2019, although he remained on as a full-time assistant coach despite not coaching a specific position.

A school spokesperson confirmed that Kelly was no longer with the program in any capacity.

Leach

I could totally see him at Arkansas...and they need somebody like him to become relevant again.

OK...the last FSU related post:

Leach ‘wants FSU’ (Nov. 10)
Washington State head coach Mike Leach was mentioned as a fit for the Arkansas opening, but Andy Staples of The Athletic dropped an interesting nugget about Leach’s interest in another job:
Andy Staples

But he wants Florida State. Someone would have to talk him into Arkansas. https://twitter.com/MattHayesCFB/status/1193587499827904513 …

Matt Hayes@MattHayesCFB

Mike Leach is a perfect fit for Arkansas. Off the beaten path (I say that lovingly, Fayetteville, folks) like Lubbock and Pullman, and a program that desperately needs a charismatic coach who will score points in bunches. #WPS

Multiple sources told Noles247 early in the process that Leach was not a top-tier candidate for FSU.

MBB Feast Week

Ducks are 4th in power rankings. Great start so far.

"Dana Altman's Ducks are heading to the Bahamas with a real chance to establish themselves as one of the elite teams in college basketball this season. They already have impressive wins over Memphis and Houston, but they might face a three-game gauntlet of Seton Hall, Gonzaga and North Carolina this week. If Oregon comes back from the Battle 4 Atlantis with three more huge wins under its belt, it is going to be a legitimate early Final Four contender. Fortunately, we here at the Power Rankings already were considering the Ducks in that conversation, so now they have to prove us right."

Breakout game for JJIII?

Johnny Johnson III is the most improved player on the Oregon offense. After a struggling sophomore season he's blossomed under Jovon Bouknight. He currently leads the team with 45 catches for 692 yards and five touchdowns.

The Chandler High School product had a spectacular game returning home before family and friends in Tempe, grabbing a career-high 10 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

He played with terrific energy and confidence on a night his quarterback and defense looked out of synch.

It will be interesting to see if the big night propels him forward as a receiver. He showed how dynamic he can be, getting open, making clutch catches, looking dangerous in the open field and knifing through defenders after the catch, using his blockers to score a momentum-seizing touchdown on a bubble screen.

What's his ceiling? After Saturday night, it seems possible he could become an exceptional weapon in the stretch drive of this season and as a senior. He's always been a hard worker and a technician. I think Bouknight has helped him tremendously; he's a similar type of player to what his coach was at Wyoming where he blossomed into a Biletnikoff Award Finalist.

So, why did this happen?

I think it's pretty simple actually. A perfect storm of sorts.

First It's extremely difficult to go undefeated in conference play. In fact, not one Pac12 team has done it since they expanded to 12 teams and added the championship game. Not one.

Young team, young coaching staff. First, I think the coaches got taught a lesson by an old wily vet. Herm was one step ahead of Mario all game long, and our coaches really kind got their butts whooped. Yes, the players need to execute but I saw very little in game adjustments all game long, and that's on the coaches.

I think it was a combo of a young team and young coaching staff reading the headlines, and forgetting to show up for the game. It happens, and this is how you learn. I believe that in all sports, you must first learn how to lose before you can learn how to win.

Things are fine. They lost, it happens. No need to freak out. We are heading in the right direction.

Question for especially the seasoned fans!

I have watched hundreds of Duck games over the years and I may be off in this comment due to the freshness of this loss...…..but have we ever had worse DB play then we did last night? Was there a double move we didn't bite on?
Even Holland who is outstanding in my book was way off last night!

I do want to say that even though Lenoir is getting blasted for that 3rd and 16 TD late, where was Pickett going? He should have been back helping Lenoir who was on an island against a very good receiver. Either Pickett made a huge mistake or the defense called for on that play was terrible!

Thoughts, has there been worse DB games, especially when they are so well thought of as a unit? My memory is not letting me remember any!

Some "morning after" thoughts

Yes. I was critical in the Fifth Quarter piece because I think that there were some things that needed to be said.

Do I purposely soften criticism for access? No. Am I personally more of a 'glass half full' guy? Yes. I tend to find positives as much as possible. As someone who has had to make firing decisions far too frequently, I never take them lightly; that has more to do with my thoughts on that concept than anything else.

I don't see the tell-tale signs that would require anyone on the current staff be fired. Are there some philosophical changes that might need some tweaking in the off-season? Yes. But I will say that what we have seen from Shough tells me that Marcus Arroyo is a good coach.

But these thoughts are with me this morning:
- Justin Herbert has had Matt Lubick/David Yost; Willie Taggart/Arroyo and now solely Arroyo as a play caller and has had multiple offensive philosophy changes
- Herbert has far exceeded what was expected of him when he signed
- This team is still 9-2 with a very real shot at a 10th win next week
- While beating Utah seems like a long shot, Oregon still has a legit chance to go to the Rose Bowl making a 12 win season still possible
- This is only Cristobal's second season as head coach, he does not have a team of 'his philosophy' yet; when he does, we will have a much better idea of how to evaluate the program; but obviously it looks a lot better than it did just three seasons ago
- 2016: 4-8
- 2017: 7-5
- 2018: 9-4
- 2019: TBD
- Prior to last night, the defense had been really good all year;
- The defense was on the field entirely too long
- I wonder why, if Redd was out, there was no attempt to use Delgado or someone else in a similar fashion. Redd on a motion to the boundary side of that fourth down play would have changed the complexion of what was run. Since Redd is out - use someone else to take away one defender from the middle; if he does not leave, then that player will be open for a quick out that would have garnered a first down.
- Mykael Wright will be a star next year
- The team DID NOT QUIT last night and I think that is my biggest takeaway; last season in the same scenario, I think the team basically gave up against Arizona. The fact that they were able to claw their way back into this game shows something about the culture of the program and the identity

Its hard to defeat human nature

Its pretty simple really. Oregon has better players than ASU and most teams in this league. Every team has good players though so if one team is ready to play and the other isn't , this is what happens. They still could have won if not for Herbert's poor play, but it was obvious it was going to be a tough game as it unfolded. Th emotion part is especially important on defense. The defense didn't play with their hair on fire as they usually do

Its impossible for a team to be emotionally ready to play every game in the course of a season. Its not a blatant disregard for the opponent. The coaches and players say and do all the right things, but on a partly subconscious level, they did not fear ASU. They were over-confident. You could tell during the game that the Ducks were not "up" for this game and that ASU was . Oregon got into it in the final quarter, but it was too late

Its hard to not get a little over-confident. I don't even really blame the coaches as this happens to ALL teams. Sometimes the better team still wins a close game, but they are at risk when the other team is more emotionally ready to play. The question now is what happens next week? OSU is VERY dangerous and if the Ducks are not at their very best, they can lose this game. My guess is that ASU was their " emotional vacation" week, and they will bounce back. No matter what, they will be playing Utah for the Pac 12 title and can still go to the Rosebowl. They have plenty to play for.
